​The lotus seedpod serves a singular purpose before its death: to produce and nurture the seeds essential for the growth of the lotus flower, a global symbol of beauty and rebirth. In contrast, the lotus pod itself remains largely unrecognized. Similarly, women are often seen as mere vessels for future generations, a role many will assume, though not all women aspire to this milestone. My ceramic lotus pod sculptures, devoid of life-giving seeds, focus on the vessel itself to challenge society’s negative perceptions of women who choose to remain childfree.

 

To convey this concept, I have developed two distinct phases in the evolution of my lotus pod sculptures. The first phase features a textured surface, muted colors, and a hollow interior, representing a woman whose childbearing years have passed. The second phase introduces grotesque, tentacle-like appendages, symbolizing the belief that a childfree woman produces nothing of value. Through raku and saggar firing techniques, the organic qualities of the pods are accentuated, and the final piece emerges as a creation ready to be presented to the world, akin to the birth of a child.
